Don't panic—but don't guess.
A loose check ball is one of those situations where guessing can create far bigger problems than the original repair.
Check balls control hydraulic oil flow inside the transmission. Depending on the transmission design, each one may regulate clutch apply timing, accumulator function, converter charge oil, or lubrication circuits.
Installing one in the wrong location—or leaving one out entirely—can cause major shift problems.
First, Stop Turning Bolts
The worst thing you can do is continue assembling the transmission while hoping you'll remember where the ball belongs.
Before going any farther:
Leave everything disassembled.
Keep the separator plate and gaskets oriented exactly as they came apart.
Don't mix parts from different sides of the valve body.
Photograph everything before moving it.
Sometimes those pictures become invaluable.
Determine Which Side It Came From
Many valve bodies have check balls located:
In the case.
On top of the separator plate.
Under the separator plate.
Inside the valve body casting.
Inside accumulator circuits.
Knowing which side the ball fell from immediately narrows the possibilities.
Verify the Correct Number
Before worrying about location, verify how many check balls the transmission is supposed to have.
Some transmissions use:
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Nine or more.
Some aftermarket shift kits intentionally remove or relocate certain check balls.
That's why you always compare what you have with the service information for that exact transmission.
Inspect the Separator Plate
Many separator plates have witness marks where the check balls contact the plate.
Look for:
Circular wear marks.
Clean spots.
Light indentations.
Polished areas.
Those marks often reveal the original location.
Never Assume They're Symmetrical
Many valve bodies appear perfectly symmetrical.
They aren't.
A check ball installed in the wrong passage may:
Eliminate a gear.
Create harsh shifts.
Cause clutch overlap.
Burn clutches.
Prevent converter clutch apply.
Produce delayed engagement.
The transmission may still move—but it won't operate correctly.

Factory service information.
Valve body identification.
Separator plate layouts.
Witness marks.
Component inspection.
Hydraulic circuit understanding.
Only after confirming every check ball is in its proper location do we complete assembly.
