It could be any of those, which is why proper diagnosis is so important. The fact that it only slips under load—such as climbing a hill—is a valuable clue.
A transmission that performs well on level roads but slips under heavier load is telling us it's struggling when higher hydraulic pressure and clutch holding force are required.
Here are the most common possibilities:
Low Hydraulic Pressure
One of the first things we check is line pressure. If the transmission isn't producing enough hydraulic pressure under load, the clutches may begin to slip during hill climbs while feeling perfectly normal during everyday driving.
Torque Converter Problems
Not every rebuild includes a new or properly remanufactured torque converter. If the converter clutch isn't operating correctly or the converter has an internal problem, it may slip under heavier loads and create excess heat.
Valve Body Issues
The valve body controls hydraulic pressure throughout the transmission. A sticking pressure regulator valve, worn valve body, or leaking separator plate can cause intermittent slipping that only appears when the transmission is working harder.
Electronic Controls
Modern transmissions rely on sensors and solenoids to regulate pressure and shift timing. A faulty pressure control solenoid, speed sensor, or wiring issue can affect transmission performance without immediately setting a warning light.
Internal Wear or Assembly Problems
Although less common this soon after a rebuild, it's possible for an internal clutch pack, sealing ring, or other component to develop a problem. Improper clutch clearances, damaged seals, or an overlooked hard part can allow slipping that's only noticeable under heavy load.
How We Diagnose It

Our diagnostic process includes:
Scanning for engine and transmission fault codes.
Road testing under the same conditions that cause the slipping.
Monitoring transmission line pressure (when applicable).
Checking torque converter clutch operation.
Reviewing transmission temperatures during the test drive.
Evaluating shift commands, actual gear ratios, and sensor data.
Only after gathering that information do we determine whether the issue is hydraulic, electronic, or internal.

A transmission that slips only going uphill doesn't automatically need another rebuild. Sometimes the cause is electronic or hydraulic and can be corrected without major repairs. Other times, the tests reveal an internal issue that needs to be addressed. The key is finding the actual cause before replacing parts.
