Asked by A driver, Andrews NC
Sorry to bother: I love this truck, save it
THE QUESTION
Everybody tells me to get rid of this truck, but I love it. If this was your truck and you wanted to save it, what would you do next?
MIKE'S ANSWER

I get asked that more than you'd think.

And here's my answer...

If it were my truck, I wouldn't decide whether to keep it until I knew exactly what was wrong with it.

I've seen people trade in a good truck because someone guessed it needed a transmission.

I've also seen people spend thousands trying to save a truck that had reached the end of the road.

The difference is knowing which one you're dealing with.

The first thing I'd do is stop replacing parts based on opinions.

I'd invest in a thorough diagnosis.

Once you know exactly what's failed, you can make a smart decision instead of an emotional one.

Then I'd ask myself three questions:

Is the truck structurally sound? (Frame, body, rust, etc.)
If I fix this problem, do I still have a truck I trust?
Can I replace this truck today for what it will cost to repair it?

A lot of times the answer surprises people.

I've had customers spend $4,000 repairing a truck that would cost $70,000 to replace. That repair made perfect financial sense.

I've also had to tell people, "I'd save my money. It's time to let this one go."

One thing I've learned over the years is this:

Don't fall in love with the repair. Fall in love with making the right decision.

Sometimes the right decision is fixing it.

Sometimes it's replacing it.

My job isn't to convince you one way or the other.

My job is to give you enough facts that if it were my truck, I'd be making the same decision you're making.

That's the kind of advice I'd want if our roles were reversed.
