Asked by A driver, Jasper GA
Sorry to bother: catching failure before it fails
THE QUESTION
My truck shifts perfectly - no slipping, no noises, no lights - but it feels different. You have worked on thousands of transmissions. How do you know when something is beginning to fail before it actually fails?
MIKE'S ANSWER

That's actually a great question.

After working on transmissions for almost 40 years, I've learned that they usually don't wake up one morning and completely fail. Most of them start whispering long before they start screaming.

Sometimes it's just a shift that's a little later than it used to be.

Maybe the torque converter doesn't lock up quite as smoothly.

Maybe it downshifts a little differently climbing a hill.

Nothing dramatic. Just...different.

The challenge is that "different" doesn't always mean "failing."

A software update, adaptive learning, a weak battery, engine performance, tire size, or even a change in driving habits can make a transmission feel different without anything actually being wrong.

So what am I looking for?

I'm looking for patterns, not just symptoms.

Is it getting worse?

Does it happen under the same conditions every time?

Can I duplicate it?

Does the scan data support what the driver is feeling?

One thing experience has taught me is this:

The customer knows when something feels different. The scan tool tells me why.

I never dismiss someone who says, "It just doesn't feel right." They're usually the first person to notice a change.

But I also don't jump straight to, "You need a transmission."

My job is to figure out whether that feeling is the beginning of a failure...or simply a change in how the vehicle is operating.

That's the difference between replacing parts and diagnosing problems. It starts by listening to both the customer and the vehicle.
